Do you smell that pumpkin spice in the air? Have you noticed the plethora of perfectly captured “#Gassongrams” featuring the breathtaking fall foliage on your Instagram feed? If you haven’t caught on yet, it’s October, and autumn is finally here.
Whether you are finished with all of your midterms, still have a few ahead of you, we are nearing the end of the late night study sessions, getting little to no sleep each night and struggling to find a place to study in Bapst and O’Neill.
Now that you have endured the rollercoaster of emotions that come from writing essays and studying for midterms, you may be anxious to venture off outside of the four walls of your room to enjoy the multitude of fall activities that BC and the city of Boston have to offer.
Luckily, we’ve got you covered with a comprehensive guide to the many activities and events going on both on and off campus throughout the fall. So grab your friends, slip into your Bean boots and your Patagonia zip-up and get ready for some fall adventures.
Off Campus
1. See a concert at the House of Blues

What could be better than cheap general admission tickets and the chance to head into the city with your friends to listen to some good music? The House of Blues is one of many concert venues around the city where you are guaranteed to have a good time. Madison Polkowitz, CSOM ’19, recently saw the Neighbourhood, an increasingly popular rock band originally from Newbury Park, California with some friends at the House of Blues. “There was definitely a young crowd,” Polkowitz said about the other attendees. “Everyone there was very committed to the band. They knew all their songs, even the new ones.” Polkowitz waited in line for nearly two hours but noted, “It was definitely worth it though, despite the cold. The energy of the crowd was dynamic and so much fun. The venue was perfect for a night away from campus”.

2. Embrace your artistic side and get crafty at the Paint Bar

Founded in 2010, the Paint Bar is a great place to go to let out the stress that has been building up throughout the past few weeks. Based off of a “paint and drink” concept, the Paint Bar is meant to be a place where people of all artistic abilities (or a lack thereof) can enjoy a drink with friends while being guided by an experienced instructor through a step-by-step painting lesson. The Paint Bar is expanding across the greater Boston area and has opened two locations near BC that would be perfect to go out with your friends to for a night of art: 248 Newbury Street, Boston and 823 Washington St, Newtonville.
3. SoWa Sundays
Located at 460 Harrison Avenue in Boston, the SoWa Open Market (open every Sunday though November) consists of some of Boston’s best food trucks, an award winning farmer’s market and a variety of local designers in the arts/crafts section. Not only can you spend your Sunday in the South End, but you can also spend your time by heading to the many restaurants, art galleries, and stores that are walking distance from the market.

On Campus

With Halloween coming up, campus will be fairly hectic—from parties to pumpkin carving to costume contests, there will be quite a lot to do. Make sure you do not miss the Boston College Acoustics Halloween A Cappella Invitational on Friday, Oct. 30 at 7:00 p.m. The show will consist of performances by the Acoustics, who are hosting the event, as well as the a cappella stylings of the BC Dynamics, Fairfield University’s Bensonians and Boston University’s Treblemakers. “We have been working really hard the past couple weeks perfecting our songs, and we can’t wait to share them with everyone,” said Dynamics member Connor Logue, CSOM ’19. “We love shows where we sing with other groups from BC and nearby schools.” Rumor has it the performers will be decked out in their best Halloween costumes and audience members are encouraged to do the same.
2. Music Guild Open Mic Nights
Do you enjoy food, music and a chance to support the many talented musicians at BC? If so, head to Lower to grab dinner and listen to some great music. The Music Guild hosts the an open mic night every other Thursday beginning at 7 p.m. With performances featuring music genres all across the board, there is something everyone can enjoy. 3. A Night at the Theatre
From Oct. 29-31 at 7:30 p.m. and at a Nov. 1 matinee at 2:00 p.m., the BC Contemporary Theatre will be presenting Bug, a show based on the complex relationship between Agnes, a divorced waitress, and Peter, a Gulf War drifter suffering from paranoia. According to BC’s university event page, “The play deals with the issues of love, paranoia, conspiracy theories, and Agnes’ slow descent into insanity under Peter’s influence.” Written by Tracy Letts, a well known playwright, screenwriter and actor, and directed by Nick Robinson, MCAS ’16, Bug is expected to be a dynamic show and a great opportunity to catch a glimpse of the many talented actors at BC. Student tickets are only $10 and can be purchased online through the Robsham Theatre box office.
